2. Choosing the Right Pad Size

Size Best For Tool Coverage
2" (50mm) Inside corners, curved edges, narrow profiles, sink cutouts Small angle grinder (4.5") Precision work
3" (80mm) Countertop edges, backsplash edges, corners 4.5" variable speed grinder Edge-focused
4" (100mm) 🔥 THE STANDARD — countertop faces, edges, floors 4.5" or 5" variable speed grinder Best all-around
5" (125mm) Large flat surfaces, production speed 5" or 7" variable speed grinder Production volume
Recommendation: If you only buy one size, get 4". It handles 90% of jobs.

3. Bond Type Explained

The bond must wear at the right rate to expose fresh diamonds. Too hard = glazing. Too soft = pads disintegrate.

Bond Wear Rate For These Stones Product
Soft Resin Wears quickly — constantly exposes fresh diamonds Marble, limestone, travertine, onyx 4" Wet Pads →
Standard Resin Balanced — good for 80% of jobs Most granite, engineered quartz 4" Wet Pads →
Hard Resin Wears slowly — resists quartz abrasion High-quartz granite, quartzite Contact us for hard bond
Metal Bond Very slow — for grinding, not polishing All stones + concrete: leveling, coating removal 4" Metal Bond →
Rule of Thumb: Hard stone → soft bond. Soft stone → even softer bond.

4. Grit Sequence Selection

Condition Starting Grit Sequence Time (50 sq ft)
Heavy damage / lippage 50 grit 50→100→200→400→800→1500→3000 5–8 hrs
New fabrication / saw marks 50 or 100 grit 50→100→200→400→800→1500→3000 3–5 hrs
Light scratches / dull surface 200 grit 200→400→800→1500→3000 2–3 hrs
Maintenance / re-shine 400 or 800 grit 400→800→1500→3000 1–2 hrs

The Fingernail Test: If it catches → 50 grit. Textured → 200 grit. Smooth but dull → 400 grit.

5. Wet vs Dry: Which Type to Buy

Factor Wet Pads ✅ Dry Pads ⚠
Gloss Quality Highest — water cools and lubricates Good, but rarely matches wet finish
Pad Life 80–150 linear ft on edges 40–70% of wet pad life
Dust Control Slurry — contained mess ⚠ Silica dust — needs HEPA + respirator
Convenience Needs water source No water needed — good for on-site
Best For Shop fabrication, indoor, premium work On-site touch-ups, outdoor, quick fixes

If you can only buy one: Get wet pads. Add dry pads later for jobs where water isn't practical.

6. Stone-by-Stone Recommendations

Stone Recommended Pad Grit Start Method
Granite (most) 4" Wet Resin, 7-grit (50–3000) 50 or 200 Wet
Granite (high quartz) 4" Wet, hard bond resin 50 or 200 Wet
Marble 4" Wet Resin, soft bond 200 Wet
Engineered Quartz 4" 3-Step Wet & Dry Pads 200 Wet only
Concrete Metal Bond (grind) + 3-Step Resin (polish) 30 Wet/Dry
Porcelain Tile 4" Wet Resin, 5-grit (200–3000) 200 Wet

7. 3-Step vs 7-Step Systems

3-Step (50/400/3000) 7-Step (50→100→200→400→800→1500→3000)
Speed Fast — 30–45 min per 50 sq ft Thorough — 1.5–2.5 hrs per 50 sq ft
Gloss 78–85 GU (good, not great) 92–96 GU (showroom quality)
Callback Risk Higher — skipped grits may show Lower — progressive refinement
Best For Concrete, production work, rental properties 🔥 Premium countertops, dark granite, high-end residential
Product 3-Step Wet & Dry → 7-Grit Wet Set →
Decision Rule: Premium customer → 7-step. Builder-grade job → 3-step is acceptable.

8. How to Spot Quality Diamond Pads

What to Look For Good Sign Red Flag
Diamond Concentration Visible diamond pattern, consistent distribution Sparse, uneven, or no visible diamonds
Backing Flexibility Flexible rubber — conforms to the surface Hard plastic backing — won't contour
Color Coding Clear, consistent color per grit No coding or color varies between batches
Velcro Quality Strong hook-and-loop, survives 100+ changes Velcro separates from pad after 20–30 uses
Wear Consistency Entire pad face wears evenly Edges wear faster than center (cheap resin)
Edge Delamination Clean edge, diamond layer bonded edge-to-edge Diamond layer peeling at edges after first use

All KAIYI pads use consistent diamond distribution, flexible rubber backers, and color-coded grit identification. Browse our full catalog →

9. FAQ — Product Selection Questions

I'm a beginner — what should I buy first?

Start with a 4" Wet Diamond Pad Set (7-grit, 50–3000), a variable speed angle grinder, and a backing pad. This handles granite, marble, and most countertop work. Add 2" or 3" pads when you start doing edge work. Add metal bond pads when you start doing heavy grinding or concrete.

How many pads do I need for one countertop?

One 7-grit set can polish approximately 50–80 sq ft of countertop edges. Expect 2–3 full countertop jobs from one set before needing replacement.

Can I mix brands of diamond pads?

Yes, but not recommended within the same job. For best results, use one brand's full set through the entire grit sequence.

How do I know when to replace a pad?

Replace when: (1) the pad stops cutting even after dressing, (2) the velcro backing shows through the resin, (3) the edge of the diamond layer delaminates, (4) the pad produces uneven results.

Do you sell individual replacement grits?

Yes. Since coarser grits (50, 100, 200) wear faster, you can purchase individual grits to replace worn pads without buying a whole new set.

Can I use the same pads on different colors of granite?

Yes, but dark resin pads can transfer dye onto light-colored stone. Use undyed white resin pads or thoroughly clean your pads first when switching to light stone.

Should I buy a 4.5" or 5" grinder for 4" pads?

Either works. The critical spec is variable speed — you need 2,000–4,500 RPM control. A fixed-speed grinder will destroy pads and burn stone instantly.
